Is Marc Jacobs Really Cruelty-Free ?
Updated: Jul 12, 2019
This is not straightforward.
The first thing to note is the different companies that own the rights to use the Marc Jacobs name.
1.Marc Jacobs Fragrances - Licenced by Coty and certainly sold in China so def not cruelty-free.
2. Marc Jacobs Fashion owned by LVMH - which has stores in China - https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/lvmh-brand-marc-jacobs-opens-its-first-online-flagship-store-in-china-on-vipcoms-luxury-channel-viplux-300537737.html 3. Marc Jacobs Beauty - Owned by Kendo - which does not sell products in China so all fine then? but wait Kendo is owned by LVMH which also owns Sephora which certainly has stores all over China. So the following is true as far as we can tell there is no chance that a Marc Jacob Beauty product is tested on animals but that if you buy it your money goes to LVMH via Kendo. LVMH certainly sells cosmetics products tested on animals in vast quantities in China and they are making huge profits from doing so https://www.reuters.com/article/us-lvmh-results/louis-vuitton-owner-lvmh-upbeat-as-chinese-shoppers-lift-sales-idUSKBN1FE2H7 LVMH made $46.83 billion last year which is a number that's hard to get your head around. For context, it's about the same as the gross domestic product of Serbia that is the value of all the goods and services produced by that country in a year. As usual our job at Circle Squared is to give you the information not to tell you what to think but for now, we will be removing Marc Jacobs and other Kendo products from our list. The reason is that although these products are not subject to animal testing the company that owns them certainly tests on animals and that's where your money is going. We'll be updating our database later this week.
