Is animal testing a thing of the past?
Updated: Jun 4, 2019
So when we began at Circle Squared we knew that cruelty free cosmetics was likely to be of interest to our community so we planned to include it in our ratings.
However things got a bit complicated very quickly 2018 happily saw the 5th anniversary of a ban on testing cosmetics on animals so it’s issue of the past right – wrong!
Unfortunately, the law in China still demands that for products to be accepted for sale they must go through an animal testing phase before they are approved.
Basically, this means that most of the big companies have found the worlds largest and fastest growing market impossible to ignore no doubt some reluctantly and some with eye simply on profits.
As usual we at Circle Squared like to let our users decide so we’ve added back into our ratings information about companies that sell cosmetics in China.
While your waiting for us to launch in a few months time if this is an issue you care about we suggest checking out https://www.crueltyfreekitty.com/ for what is currently the best database on this issue.
Last word – Though it has no specific timeline China’s Institute National Food and Drug Control which makes the rules announced in October that it is committed to overhauling current practice and introducing non animal testing methods as one of its “top priorities” – we’ll be sure to keep an eye on this situation as things change however Chinese government agencies don’t make clear statements like this unless they are very sure of the direction.
